Product Description
Product Description
The Galvanic Isolator VDI-64A is a high-performance device designed to protect your boat from electrolytic corrosion by effectively blocking unwanted DC currents that can damage underwater metals. Its waterproof, potted construction ensures reliable operation in harsh marine environments.
Key Features
- Maximum Current Rating: 64 Amperes
- Waterproof Design: Potted construction for enhanced durability
- Diode Configuration: Two diodes connected in anti-parallel
- Terminal Size: 6MM (1/4")
- Voltage Threshold: Diodes conduct at approximately 1.4 VDC
- Installation Voltage Range: 120V - 230V AC
How It Works
The Galvanic Isolator VDI-64A prevents electrolytic corrosion by blocking low voltage DC currents that enter your boat through the shore power earth connection. These unwanted DC currents can accelerate corrosion of critical underwater components such as the hull, propeller, and shaft. The isolator achieves this by using two diodes arranged in an anti-parallel configuration, allowing current to flow only when the voltage exceeds the 1.4 VDC threshold. This ensures that normal operation does not interfere with your boat’s electrical system.
Installation Guide
- Locate the shore power connection on your boat.
- Install the galvanic isolator directly behind the 120V - 230V AC connection point.
- Connect the isolator’s terminal posts, ensuring a secure 6MM (1/4") connection.
- Verify all connections are tight and protected from the elements.
- Test the installation to ensure the isolator is functioning correctly and that the residual-current device responds to any error voltages.
Protection Against Electrolytic Corrosion
By installing the Galvanic Isolator VDI-64A, you create a barrier that prevents harmful DC currents from causing corrosion to your boat’s submerged metals. The device’s forward voltage is higher than the typical potential difference between different metals, effectively stopping any electrolytic current from flowing. In the event of a higher error voltage within the AC circuit, the diodes will conduct the excess current, prompting the residual-current device to disconnect and protect your vessel.
Compliance and Support
Please note: This galvanic isolator is not ABYC A-28 approved.
